Recently, the observed equation of state for dark energy appears to favor values below −1. The tendency implies that the nature of dark energy may be quite different from that of the cosmological constant. In view of this, the introduction of the phantom energy seems inevitable. By employing observational constraints from supernovae and from the acoustic scale in which the accuracy of the data has become extraordinary, the research team applied a phenomenological scenario to be acquainted with the evolution of our universe. The demonstration of the constrained unfolding of the phantom energy shows that the model has high consistency with the current observation, suggesting that if it is phantom dark energy that is causing the accelerating expansion of the universe instead of the cosmological constant, then the Hubble constant may be different from the recent observations, and the “Hubble tension” problem may not be as severe as expected. more

In the pursuit of cleaner energy, solar cells are expected to be widely applied in various fields; however, current solar cells are limited in their development due to the low conversion efficiency of light to electricity. To enhance the material's absorption of light, the research team altered the characteristics of light by utilizing twisted light. Photons of twisted light carry an orbital angular momentum. Additional orbital angular momentum is expected to induce more carrier transitions within the material, thereby increasing the material's light absorption and its photogenerated carrier concentration, elevating its potential for application in solar cells. The highlight of this experiment lies in using twisted light to enhance the light absorption of novel 2D material molybdenum disulfide. As the orbital angular momentum of light increments, the concentration of photo-induced carriers rises as well. Consequently, the larger photovoltaic effect in solar cells is enhanced. Based on the results of this experiment, twisted light has shown its potential to become a new approach to enhancing the efficiency of solar cells.more

High blood pressure is a crucial risk factor for many cardiovascular diseases, and a diet rich in whole-grain foods may modulate blood pressure. This study investigated the effects of dehulled adlay consumption on blood pressure and endothelium functions, and discovered that it could retard blood pressure increases over a 12-week experimental period in hypertensive animals. In an additional human trial, 23 participants with overweight and obese-consumed 60g of dehulled adlay daily for a six-week experimental period, and exhibited a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure (SBP). The change in SBP was even more evident in participants with high baseline SBP. A daily intake of 60g of dehulled adlay is therefore suggested as a replacement over some staple foods as it delivers beneficial effects for blood-pressure management.more

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) has become a health problem as alcohol consumption has increased annually both in Taiwan and around the world. Hepatic lipid accumulation, oxidative stress, and inflammation are important factors in the progression of ALD. Red pitaya (Hylocereus polyrhizus) peel is rich in polyphenols and betanins, which possess antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of red pitaya peel extract (PPE) on ALD, and explore the associated mechanisms. Laboratory mice were administered an ethanol liquid diet, which induced ALD, and PPE treatment was shown to reduce hepatic fat accumulation, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Thus, PPE may help prevent the progression of ALD.more

Like humans, different animals may behave differently. According to the pace-of-life hypothesis, animals of smaller body sizes generally have shorter life spans and begin reproduction at earlier ages compared to larger species. Since they are required to reproduce within relatively fast-paced life histories, smaller species may exhibit riskier behavior in order to quickly secure sufficient food resources. This study examined four wild rodent species in Taiwan and their behavioral response to predator (leopard cat) cues, and it was found that the two rodents of smaller size invested less time in avoidance behavior, while the larger species were relatively cautious. These findings correspond to the pace-of-life hypothesis, suggesting that larger animals are not necessarily bolder.more

It is well-established that cognitive functions are an important factor that affects children’s learning. Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), however, often suffer from learning difficulties and social adaptation problems due to their lack of sustained attention and inhibitory control. While research has shown that acute exercise can improve cognitive functions, the duration of such beneficial effects is yet to be confirmed. Moreover, objective benchmarks such as event-related brain potentials (ERP) and resting-state heart rate variability (HRV) are less used in physical and psychological observation. The objective of this study was to understand the sustained effects of acute moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (MAE) on inhibitory control in children with ADHD. A within-subject design was conducted on 24 children diagnosed with ADHD ranging from 8-12 years old, and the changes in inhibitory control, heart rate variability (HRV), and event-related potentials (ERP) indices were observed within one hour after an exercise intervention condition or a control condition. The results indicated that acute bouts of MAE facilitate inhibitory control in children with ADHD for as long as 60 min, which was reflected in the children’s performance and ERP measurements. However, acute aerobic exercise may not modulate sympathovagal balance during the post-exercise recovery. Overall, we highlight the importance of acute aerobic exercise for children with ADHD as a potential means to facilitate brain health.more
