2025-04-25 Asian children are less susceptible to constipation – except for Taiwanese children 點閱次數: 24
Child or adult, nearly everyone knows what it feels like to be “a little backed up,” so to speak. Assistant Professor Ngan Thi Kim Nguyen from the NTNU Programs of Nutrition Science has conducted in-depth research on the prevalence of constipation among Asian children and its related factors. Her findings reveal that the prevalence of constipation among Asian children is approximately 12%, which is significantly lower than the global average of 29%. Among Asian regions, South Asia has a slightly lower prevalence rate (6.9%) compared to East Asia (14.1%). However, a surprising discovery is that the prevalence of constipation among school-aged children in Taiwan reaches 32.2%, far exceeding that of other regions in Asia.more

2025-03-24 Professor Yung-Chih Chen’s Top Three Strategies to Counteract Negative effects of Prolonged Sitting 點閱次數: 122
In modern society, prolonged sedentary behavior has become a common lifestyle, particularly among office workers who may not have the time for regular exercise. However, extended periods of sitting can have detrimental effects on health, including impaired postprandial blood glucose and insulin regulation, as well as an increased risk of weight gain and obesity. Associate Professor Yung-Chih Chen from the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences at National Taiwan Normal University has conducted two studies demonstrating that interrupting prolonged sitting can promote metabolic health by stimulating the secretion of gut hormones and increasing energy expenditure. His research also explores simple strategies to break up sedentary behavior and enhance overall well-being.more

2025-01-24 The Shifting Shadow of M87*: A New Key to Understanding Black Hole Environments 點閱次數: 91
Using observations from 2017 and 2018, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration has deepened our understanding of the supermassive black hole at the center of Messier 87 (M87*). This study opens a new window into multi-year analysis at horizon scales by leveraging a new simulation image library with more than 120,000 additional images compared to the last one. The team confirmed that M87*’s black hole rotational axis points away from Earth and demonstrated that turbulence within the accretion disk — rotating gas around the black hole — plays an important role in explaining the observed shift in the ring’s brightness peak compared to 2017. The findings, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, mark a major step forward in unraveling the complex dynamics of black hole environments.more

2024-11-25 Big Data Confirms that Methylphenidate is good for reducing ADHD Mortality in the Long Term 點閱次數: 151
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder in children and adolescents, significantly impacting cognitive learning and social interactions. Methylphenidate (MPH) is the primary pharmacological treatment for ADHD; however, parents’ concerns about potential side effects, including self-harm and suicide, have posed substantial challenges for clinical management. Professor Tzu-Chi Lee from the Department of Health Promotion and Health Education at National Taiwan Normal University has pioneered research in Taiwan to clarify the relationship between MPH use and mortality rates. The findings reveal that individuals who use MPH exhibit lower overall mortality rates compared to those who do not. Additionally, earlier initiation of MPH treatment following an ADHD diagnosis, as well as long-term use of the medication, is associated with further reductions in mortality risk.more

2024-08-29 New Technology Proves Key to Parkinson's Disease Treatment 點閱次數: 147
Taiwan has approximately 50,000 to 100,000 Parkinson's disease patients, but there is currently no cure. Levodopa is an important medication for treating Parkinson's disease, but its concentration is difficult to control. When the concentration is too high, it can cause side effects such as nausea and vomiting. A research team led by Professor Yi-Chun Yeh from the Department of Chemistry at National Taiwan Normal University has developed a new thermostable enzyme derived from the thermophilic bacterium Streptomyces sclerotialus. Using a red fluorescent signal, this enzyme can detect the presence of levodopa in just 30 minutes, potentially improving the safety of levodopa treatment. more
