It has long been known that there is a close symbiotic relationship between silverline butterflies and ants. The larvae of the silverline butterfly have honey (nectar) glands and other ant-loving (myrmecophily) organs that attract ants and increase their survival rate by being cared for by ants. The larvae secrete honeydew for the ants to feed on. It is interesting though that the pupa does not have ant-loving organs to attract ants. This phenomenon has caused scientists to wonder if there are other mechanisms by which small gray butterflies attract ants. One of the answers is the inaudible sound vibration signal, which was published in an international journal on December 6, 2019 (Scientific Reports).more

NTNU will annually send two Chinese language instructors on exchange to PSU, while PSU students come to NTNU for in-depth Chinese language study and to provide English language tutorials to local elementary schools in New Taipei City. more

Promoting athletic performance through nutritional supplementation has been a popular research topic in sports science, and caffeine has been proven in many studies to be a legitimate supplement that can effectively enhance aerobic and anaerobic performance. However, whether caffeine, which also has an analgesic effect, can be effective in reducing muscle strength performance when the exercise causes delayed muscle soreness in the case of supplementation, and whether the effect has gender differences, has not been clarified. Therefore, we designed an experiment in which a downhill running caused running-induced delayed muscle soreness with male and female athletes, followed by caffeine supplementation of about three cups of American coffee, and observed the degree of muscle soreness change and muscle strength performance. The results showed that caffeine supplementation was effective in terms of reducing the muscle pain of both male and female athletes, but the degree of reduction in pain was higher in men than in women. Both men and women, however, can benefit from the same supplement of coffee that reduces the maximum loss of muscle strength. If you have muscle soreness and want to exercise, drink some coffee next time.more

 2021-09-21 Transformers in The Porous Materials Field: Extremely Fast Lattice Rearrangement of the MOF Structures 點閱次數: 85
In this work, we present a case system that can achieve rapid structural rearrangement of the whole lattice of a metal–organic framework (MOF) through a ‘domino’ alteration of the bond connectivity under mild conditions. Topological transitions between significantly different phases typically require extreme conditions to collectively break chemical bonds and overcome the stress caused to the original structure by altering its correlated bond environment. Our system transforms from a disordered and less crystalline MOF with low porosity to a highly crystalline and porous isomer within few minutes upon activation (solvent exchange and desorption), resulting in a significant increase in surface area, from 725 to 2,749 m2/g. Spectroscopic measurements show that this counter-intuitive lattice rearrangement involves a metastable intermediate with defect frameworks that results from solvent removal on coordinately unsaturated metal sites. This less crystalline–crystalline switch between two topological distinct MOFs is shown to be reversible over four cycles through activation and re-immersion in polar solvents. The aim of this study was to investigate the partial defects in real MOF crystalline structures and to focus on defect-induced MOF properties, which are expected to enhance and develop the physical, mechanical, electronic and optical material properties and chemical activities of MOF materials. This research adopted an exploratory experimental procedure that facilitated the synthesis of highly porous MOFs, which were previously not easy to synthesize, and functional applications for defective and highly porous MOFs were further developed.more

In order to teach students to live happily, Wellington College in England pioneered the happiness curriculum. The purpose of this article is to analyze the concept of happiness in the book "Teaching Happiness and Well-being in Schools" by Ian Morris, a representative figure of the British happiness curriculum, in order to judge whether happiness can be taught. The paper points out that Morris' perspective of happiness has undergone transformation, beginning with a direct inheritance from positive psychology, and emphasizing the adjustment of the subject's mindset. In the middle stage, he adopts Aristotle's theory of happiness in action, regarding happiness as a natural feeling and state experienced after activities by the subject. In the latter stage, it is clearly asserted that happiness is an activity according to virtue and that the happiness curriculum should be the foundation of character education. Overall, the Morris Happiness curriculum can be seen as a complex of positive psychology and Aristotle's theory of happiness. Basically, the modules of the well-being curriculum are drawn from the key themes of positive psychology at the beginning, emphasizing that students learn happiness skills that have been proven to be effective, and then changing to underline that these themes must be connected to the development of personal virtue. At this point, happiness lessons and character education become inseparable. This article concludes that happiness can be taught and needs to be taught, but that given the multiplicity of happiness, it is also necessary to examine the concept of happiness reflected in the teaching of happiness from a philosophical perspective. more

Lu from the Department of Physics at National Taiwan Normal University participated in the Taiwan-German cross-border research team formed by the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC). They have studied the "Cobalt/Molybdenum Disulfide Heterostructure" and found that through heterostructure "orbital hybridization", "spontaneous magnetic anisotropy" may be produced. Due to the positive response from the inaugural run of the program, the schools conducted another call for proposals for the Collaboration Development Fund in 2020 and received 15 submissions, which were reviewed by a panel comprising representatives from both schools.
