Wilbur Lin, an alumnus of NTNU, was selected as the assistant conductor among hundreds of applicants at Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in 2019. At the end of 2020, Lin was invited by National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra to conduct the year end concert of Youth Orchestra. On December 25th, Lin came back to NTNU to share his journey with students of Music Department. more

Chair professor and outstanding alumnus of NTNU, Prof. Shih Shu Mei was appointed the inaugural Edward W. Said Professor of Comparative Literature at UCLA in mid-July. Prof. Shih is tremendously important in the development of Taiwan studies in UCLA. A graduate from the English Department, she initiated the collaboration and mutual exchange opportunities between UCLA and NTNU. What’s more, the annual event of Taiwan studies was also held in UCLA. Prof. Shih said that Taiwan studies has been decentralized for many years, it’s her honor to be given the title and hopes to fight for more attention academically.more

The eighth and ninth president of the Republic of China and the alumni of the Taihoku High School, Former President Lee Teng Hui, died at Taipei Veterans General Hospital on July 30, 2020, age 98. The news shocked people all over the world. Leaders such as US Secretary of State Pompeo, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and current President Tsai Ing-wen all expressed their condolences. The history of former President Lee leading Taiwan to the road to democracy is quite an emotional one.more

Ang Mei Foong is the alumna of National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), where she learned under Prof. Ren Rong; she then continued her vocal studies at Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia, Rome, where she learned with Maestra Rebecca Berg; and subsequently the University of Melbourne, under the tutelage of the renowned Australian soprano Merlyn Quaife. Now, she teaches at the Music Department of University Putra Malaysia (UPM). On October 30rd, she was given the honor of the The Arts and Creativity at the Education Ministry’s 13th National Academic Awards, presented by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. The good new spread to NTNU and the faculty of Music Department was really glad about it.more

Wilbur Lin, an alumnus of NTNU, is selected as the assistant conductor among hundreds of applicants at Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. According to Lin, this is his first official contract in the states which last for a year and will start this fall. Before, he gave lessons occasionally. It's an exciting opportunity for him to join a professional orchestra. Lin will be responsible for the education program and tour of Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and Cincinnati Symphony Youth orchestra. more

According to the Office of International Affairs, foreign students in NTNU mostly study at the Dept. of Chinese as a Second Language and the Dept. of Business Administration. These are students who already speak Chinese. If we want to attract students who are not yet fluent in Chinese, we need to increase the number of English-taught courses. Now English-taught courses are available in English Department, Graduate Institute of International Human Resource Development, and master and phD programs at the Department of Math.more

President Wu pointed out that we have 284 indigenous students in NTNU with a research center. Indigenous studies is also one of the key research topic of UBC. Chen You Ren, an alumna of the Department Of Design, class 2017, was granted a full scholarship from the MOE Scholarship Program for Oversea Study of Arts and Design and study at Parsons the New School of Design. In 2017, the MOE Scholarship Program for Oversea Study of Arts and Design sent 18 students to 9 countries, 16 institutes for further study and practicum. more

Alumna, Soprano, Le Keng, graduated in 2008, received two first prizes at International Vocal Contests. The first one is the International Vocal Competition at Ningbo in October and now she gained the first prize, the best singer for Dvorak piece and the best Baroque music singer at the 53rd International Antonin Dvorak Singing Competition at Karlovy Vary. Le Keng's interpretation of Rusalka amazed the audience. When presenting the award, Dvorak's nephew praised that if there's Rusalka in the real world, it must be like this! She also got the chance to play the leading roles of Un ballo in maschera and Aida by Verdi. She said that she faces tremendous pressure when joining competitions when there's many outstanding vocalist out there, but all the hard work paid off when she was praised by the nephew of Dvorak. Le Keng says that it's defiantly hard for Taiwanese singers to find a career Europe. It's very competitive and challenging in singing a well as in language. For example, she was appointed to sing in Czech after she received the prize. She has to find a tutor to correct her pronunciation. more

At the graduation ceremony of the National Taiwan Normal University on June 23rd, President Wu Cheng Chih presented an art doctorate in honorary art to Chair Professor Liao Shiou Ping in recognition of his lifelong efforts in the creation, education, promotion of printmaking. As a promoter of modern printmaking in Taiwan, Dr. Liao introduced lots of foreign printmaking techniques and advocated the concepts and techniques of modern printmaking. Thus, Taiwan's printmaking art is full of creativity and modern multidisciplinary. He also cultivates countless printmaking artists. Dr. Liao is widely considered as Taiwan’s “Father of Modern Printmaking”. more
