| Violinist Sherry Kloss, successor of internationally renowned violinist Heifetz and his violin, was invited by Chen Qin-Hong from the Department of Music, NTNU to have a master class on the 14th of April. Kloss encouraged students who were aspired to be a teacher to develop the potential of their students. “If you can do more than one thing, then go for it,” remarked Kloss. She had a musically gifted student who ended up going into the field of physics and architecture. It is her responsibility as a teacher, she said, to let her students explore the world of music care- and pressure- free.more |

| In order to understand and assess the policy and realization of civic and moral education, Kok Lee-Kwuang, Deputy Director of Aesthetics, Health and Moral Education Branch, Curriculum Planning and Development Department, Ministry of Education, Singapore, visited NTNU to call on Professor Li Qi-Ming at the Department of Civic Education and Leadership. Professor Li was an important researcher on Taiwan’s civil and moral education. To provide Taiwan’s experience as Singapore’s reference, Professor Li examined Taiwan’s civic education from viewpoints of educational environment, curriculum, policy, teachers’ development and trend. A Secret Study Group for Faculties |

| As part of the Psychological Health Promotion Series, the Center of Student Counselling established a secret study group for school faculties entitled Wishes Come True. The first session was held on the 8th of April in classroom 313. It encouraged teachers to talk about their secrets, and develop their potential and change their lives through the Law of Attraction. This study group session was especially tailored for faculties of NTNU. It is based on a popular publication in 2007, the Secret, which talked about the power of positivism. There will be two other session on April 15th and 22nd. more |

| The bachelor program in performing art, established by the Graduate Institute of Performing Art, NTNU, will start to enrol students this coming school year! The second explanatory session on the main campus of NTNU on the 8th of April had nearly a hundred students present. The session was chaired by He Kang-Guo and Xia Xue-Li from the Graduate Institute of Performing art. The program, designed based on the regulations of the Ministry of Education, will be a double-major course with 60 required and selected credits. Those who complete the program will be qualified to teach in performing-art departments. more |

| On April 10th, a grand flag-dance and an enthusiastic cheerleading show opened the 2009 Education Night. Tang Guang-Ding, Chairman of the Department of Education, tried his hand at singing and sang On the Golden Beach, symbolizing the sailing of this educational pirate ship. Immediately after the chairman’s performance followed a variety of short plays, singing and dancing performances, fully exhibiting the energy and talents of education major students. Neurologist Hong Lan Lectured on Brain Functions and Learning Strategies |

| On March 31st, the first session of the Learn to Grow series, the Center of Teaching and Learning Development invited Hong Lan, Director of the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, National Central University to talk about brain functions and learning strategies for college students. She reminded NTNU students that morning is the prime time for mind activities while the evening low, and that students who were used to stay up should value sleep more. Another key point to the brain was to “use it, or lose it”. Extensive reading of all kinds of knowledge would benefit students greatly. more |

NTNU Became Crowned King and Queen of Volleyball |

| Followed by the good news from the men’s basketball team of NTNU, the men and women volley ball team defeated the Taipei Physical Education College this March, and won the championship of UVL University Cup for the second year in a roll. The training process for the men’s team went swimmingly, remarked the coach Chang En-Chong. As for the women’s team, he continued, it was more difficult because the team had undergone some restructuring, leaving players with less experience and less positive mindset. However, the two teams showed great sense of unity, a key factor to their winning.more |

| With the witness of Ministry of Education, NTNU and Holland’s Leiden University renewed their academic cooperation agreement, increasing exchange student quota from 5 to 8 both way. This allowed more students to broaden their international horizons and to learn from each culture. Robert Coelen, Ex-Principle of Leiden University, visited Taiwan for a cooperation forum for botanic medicine and bio science on March 8th and 9th, when he also signed academic cooperation agreements with 4 Taiwan universities. Leiden University has cooperation with many other universities in the world, actively encouraging international students to go to the Netherlands under their exchange scheme.more |

| March 12th, General Manager Lin Huo-Qing of POP Three Dimensional Picture Co. Ltd. visited NTNU, and signed a cooperation agreement with Hong Rong-Zhao, Director of the Office of Research and Development. Departments such of geography, design, and graphic arts and communication were also involved in discussing the details of this agreement. POP Three Dimensional Picture’s main products are 3D pictures. Hopefully, through this new university and industry liaison system, they’ll be able to develop products with higher quality and lower cost and take them into the world market. more |

| As the second seminar of the Learn to Grow series by the Center of Teaching and Learning Development, 4 professors were invited on April 8th to share their learning experiences in universities. Professor Liu Jie-Xin stressed on the importance of time management, while Professor Cai Meng-Zhen emphasized participating in extracurricular activities and expanding social networks. Assistant Professor Guo Jing-Guo, on the other hand, told students that facing up to all problems was the only solution in life. Lastly, Professor Zhao Hui-Ling encouraged the student to be rebellious, i.e. knowing what they want, and not just obeying everything they were told. more |

| In the modern society, we tend to neglect the importance of a healthy lifestyle. On April 7th, there was a lunchtime gathering on the new trend of LOHAS. Hosted by Professor Yen Han-Wen, the gathering invited Professor Wang Kai-Fu, Professor Liu Jie-Xin and Assistant Professor Chen Guang-Rong to talk about their viewpoints and experiences. Five important Rights were mentioned: right sleep, right sport, right food, right doctor and rightly against burnout. It was a fulfilling and wonderful lunchtime, but remember, a healthy lifestyle should be practiced in and extended to everyday life.more |

| An overseas text message opened the conversations between a father and his daughter, Xiao-Ye and Li Ya, two brilliant Taiwanese writers. Their overseas communications were collected and published, entitled Face Up. On April 9th, NTNU invited them to talk about children upbringing, sharing with students their different viewpoint from 2 different generations. Xiao-Ye’s father had a strict education manner. Consequently, perhaps, he gave his daughter Li Ya much more freedom, tolerance and room for exploration than he had. “Love has no absolute rights,” they concluded. With the father’s memories in the book, the daughter strides into her future.more |

| To commemorate the NTNU-NTU 46 Incident 60 years ago, the fist white terror event on campus, NTNU retired professor Wen Zen-Hua, jointly invited by the Department of History and the Graduate Institute of Taiwan History, brought the precious investigation materials to public on the incident on April 4th. With materials including letters from families of the victims to NTNU professors, a list of expelled students, etc., Wen wished current students could look back on the humane spirits these alumnus were fighting for. | A film festival was held on the 1st of April in the assembly hall on the main campus of NTNU, showing environmental protection themed short films shot by the students of the Communication Workshop. The five groups of students spent 6 months on the project, documenting animals in Fushan Zoo. This workshop is one of NTNU’s efforts in establishing courses to train cross-disciplinary talents, said Vice President Chang, who applauded the devotion of involved professionals and students with backgrounds ranging from history, Chinese literature, life science to graphic arts and communications. more |

Success in Teaching Excellence Project |

| After the amendment of Teacher Education Law in 1994, teacher education is no longer exclusive to normal universities. In order to stand out, NTNU started a Teaching Excellence Project in 1998 to train more professional teachers. A presentation was held on April 1st to show the achievements of the project. Chang Zi-Chao, the 1st keynote speaker, talked about Regional Centres of Expertise promoted by the United Nations, saying that though it was hard for Taiwan to establish a RCE, we were vigorously involved in achieving education for sustainable development. There will be another presentations on the 8th with more keynote speeches. more |
