On June 23rd, the National Badminton Tournament for University Faculty was held in NTNU. 1344 contestants formed 161 teams from 72 universities get acquainted with one another through badminton. Administrative staff and teachers are extraordinarily fierce with their rackets. The cheering coming from the audience heated up the atmosphere, almost breaking through the ceiling. Badminton has become a popular sport, remarked NTNU President Guo Yih-Shun, as well as the president of Badminton Committee, Chinese Taipei University Sports Federation. He wished that faculties from all universities could have more interaction and exchanges among one another through this popular sport.more

Li Jia-Tong, a presidential advisor as well as a noted scholar and writer, participated at the graduation ceremony of NTNU. In his speech entitled The Last Class in University, he stressed that the most important thing for a person is to make positive contribution to the society, and whether that person is wealthy and powerful or not is not the point. However, wealth and power is not necessarily evil. He urged the 3620 NTNU graduates to work hard and increase their competitiveness for they can help the less fortunate only when they have the financial resource.more

On June 23rd, noted Japanese holography artist, Setsuko Ishii, donated his work entitled Scenes of Grasslands to NTNU. President Guo Yih-Shun represented the whole school and accepted the gift from Ishii. The work will be displayed on the first floor of the Complex Building, Kungkuan Campus. Doctor Ishii has been devoted to the world of holography for over 30 years, and has had exhibitions in Europe, Asia and the States. Holography is a method of producing a three-dimensional image of an object. Doctor Ishii applied the technique in her works and has published many holography studies in international periodicals and seminars.more

In order to celebrate the 63rd birthday of NTNU, Wang Jin-Ping, President of the Legislative Yuan as well as the President of NTNU Alumni Association, gave his alma mater a giant cream cake with 3 layers and a diameter of 15 meters. On top of the cake was a bronze statue of Chiang Kai-Shek cleverly made of chocolate to mimic the texture and the colour. This colourfully decorated turned the 63rd anniversary of the establishment of NTNU a flourishing and cheerful carnival.more

On June 17th, Adam Gamoran, Dean of the Education College, Universty of Wisconsin-Madsin (UW-Madsin), led 3 other professors to pay a visit to NTNU, and signed an memo of international cooperation with Zhuang Kun-Liang, Dean of the Office of International Affair, NTNU. UW-Madsin becomes the 145th sister school of NTNU. The 2 schools will have further discussions on exchange student programs and academic exchange schemes. After visiting NTNU, UW–Madsin professors also went to National Taiwan University and National Chengchi University with the company of Vice President Chen Chiung-Hua and Dean He Rong-Gui of the Education College.more

2009 graduation ceremony was held in the gymnasium on June 20th when 3620 graduates were sent off. The theme of this year’s graduation ceremony was Star 2009, signifying all graduates being the stars of tomorrow, and wishing that all NTNU students a great performance whether they decided to continue studying or start working. President Guo Yih-Shun encouraged students to be brave in facing the pressure brought by the economic downfall, and to actively apply what they’d learnt in school while maintaining a life-long learning attitude. The gymnasium was decorated with balloons and bouquets, creating a cheerful and warm atmosphere.more

It was June 20th that NTNU had its 2009 graduation ceremony. In respond to this joyful event, NTNU mascots, 3 green turtles stating NTNU’s determination to be environmentally friendly, also put on academic gowns and wore mortar boards to say farewell to the graduates. The costumes of these mascots got many of the graduates extremely excited: they all wanted to hold hands or take pictures with the mascots. More than 3 hundred graduates asked to take photos with them, remarked Li Zhong-Han, a student from the Department of History who played one of the mascots. more

As the current Mayor of Chiayi and the Vice Chairperson of the KMT, Huang Min-Hui, graduating from NTNU in 1982, does not have the typical politician feel: she is accessible and friendly. During this interview, her tones were soft but the expression in her eyes determined. We could see her gentle disposition cultivated in the Department of Chinese though she has taken another career path after teaching for 14 years. It is a natural occupational choice since she was born in a political family. Yet, “my involvement in education has been one of the biggest fortune in my life,” Huang remarked. more

“NTNU has a life-long influence on me,” said Dr. Wu Jian-Xin, an Hong Kong student graduating from NTNU in 1974. “I’ve been following the school motto for over the past 3 decades, which made all my achievements possible.” Wu is an alumnus of the Department of Social Education. He’s currently the Executive Director of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong. When it comes to his alma mater, all he has to say is gratitude and appreciation. After graduation, Wu returned to Hong Kong and has been working in YMCA since then.more

Guo Bo-Jia, Principle of Taichung First Senior High School (TFSHS), graduated from the Department of Mathematics in 1973. He started his educational career as a frontline teacher in Tainan Second Senior High School (TSSHS). He offered to accompany students to study on his holidays, which enhanced the performances of many students, and made donations for students with less wealthy background. His dedication and effort were recognized and he became the principle of TSSHS. “As a teacher graduating form NTNU, I’m just doing my part,” he said humbly when he became the principle of TFSHS last year. more

Cai Dian-Mo was born in a farming family and raised by his illiterate but loving parents. As a child, he needed to toil in the farm and help with farming, thus he didn’t have the time and energy to study. By chance, he entered the newly established Xingwu High School. Having been enlightened by wonderful teachers in junior and senior high schools, he aspired to be a professor. Cai graduated from the Department of Education in 1973 and became the principle of National Taitung University as well as the president of the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children. more

Graduating from the Department of Chinese in 1966, Fang Sheng-Xong now teaches at the Professor at the Department of Applied English at Kun Shan University. During his years in NTNU, he diligently studied French. Though he didn’t foresee the application of the language in the future, French-related selective courses gave him the strength to promote both eastern and western cultures and to increase Europeans’ understandings towards Taiwan. Fang established the Department of French in National Central University, which produced most of today’s chairmen and professors in the department of French all around Taiwan. more

Graduating from the Department of Fine Arts in 1966, Huang Yong-Chuan has been working in the National Museum of History for nearly 4 decades. It’s the “only job in his life”, he commented. Huang is simple and honest, dedicated and focused. Besides administrational works of the museum and programming exhibitions that re-energize cultural and historic relics, he continues to express his artistic side through creation. He wished to give special thanks to Wu Mei-Ling, a local artist of calligraphy drawing that led him into the world of art when he was in high school.more

Hu Shu-De (originally Hu Jing-Shan) is the 4th generation of Chinese in Thailand graduating from the Department of Social Education in 1964. His great-grand father set off to develop his career in Thailand from China, and both his grand father and father had gone back to China to study. Originally planning to study in China, he came to Taiwan in the end because of China’s unstable political situation. After serving as a police officer for several years in Taiwan, he went back to Thailand and continued serving his country. He established a NTNU Thai Alumni Association.more

Doctor Zhang Yuan-Qiao, a NTNU graduate in the Department of Physics in 1964, had been the manager of the thermal control system in space shuttle, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from 1981 to May 2009. In the duration, Dr. Zhang had participated 121 times out of 126 launching, and had taken the leading role in the thermal control system in space shuttle for 81 times. Current Mission Management Chairman John Shannon recognized Dr. Zhang’s contribution to NASA and commented that his ability was “immeasurable”. more

Graduated in 1963 from the Department of Music, Tyzen Hsiao was a composer, pianist as well as a conductor. He was dubbed as the “Rachmaninoff in Taiwan, the last Romantic pianist/poet”. Having a pianist mother, Hsiao started to learn piano at the age of five and showed a talent for piano performance and composition early in his music career. “All my achievements in music needs to be accredited to the teaching and cultivation of NTNU,” Hsiao said thankfully. He still considered NTNU to be the best music education he had ever receive in his life full of music.more

A MA student in the department of English graduating in 1958, as well as a retired NTNU professor of the same department, Qiu Huan-Tang has devoted himself into the world of ceramics for over four decades. He is the first Taiwanese artist to introduce contemporary western concept of ceramics creation into Taiwan. He believes in breaking free from the limitations of material and conventions when creating ceramics, and a great many of his students later becomes outstanding ceramists. NTNU, for Qiu, is not only his school and workplace, but also where he met the loves of his life – his wife and ceramics. more

Graduated from the Department of Industrial Education in 1957. He is a MA in Educational Administration and a Doctor in Philosophy. He’s been studying Chinese-style management for more than three decades, and is called “the father of Chinese management”, a Chinese who knows all Chinese the most. Back in 1953, Ceng told us, he was attracted by the newly established department, which cooperated with Pennsylvania University and offered students further study in the US after their graduation. Coming from a poor family, this skinny boy grew into a stronger youngster mentally and physically during his stay in NTNU. more

Professor Huang Jin-Hong was one of the first set of graduates from the Department of Chinese in 1950. His early life was tough with poverty and warfare. He didn’t have much chance to receive school education and didn’t finish his bachelor degree until he was 28 years-old. He pursued further studies in Japan even after he became a university professor. He can be one of the best role models with his diligence and persistence. Huang has devoted himself in Chinese education and cultivated generations of students with outstanding achievements. His publications are rich and varied, which further proofs Huang’s achievements and excellence.more

This is the first year of the NTNU Teaching Excellence Award, which aims to recognize and reward the effort and achievements of excellent teachers. The act was passed in 2008 and the selection process also begun in the same year. 5 professors, including Associate Professor Huang Jing-Hui from the Department of Adult and Continuing Education, Professor Li Jing-Mei from the Department of Health Education, Professor Chang Ming-Hui form the Department of Education, Professor Huang Fu-Kun from the Department of Physics, and Professor Li Chung-Mo from the Department of Computing Science and Information Engineering. more

The second stage of the student club yearly review, a carnival of performances, was held on My 19th at the auditorium. 18 clubs signed up for the this stage to compete for a wide range of awards. No contestant did not work their hardest and give their best to impress the judges and the audience. The show was opened by a glamorous and sexy belly dancing, followed by the stunning rumba and jive performances by the ballroom dancing club. The night was boiling, filled with applause. On May 22nd, Friday, there would be an award ceremony at the auditorium. more

If the answer is positive, you would be glad to know that on May 20th, a lecture was held jointly by students from the Department of Health Education and the Health Center. The executive officer of the New Life Educational Center, Tan Xi-Xian was invited to explain the secrets behind the rehabilitation of dope heads. New Life Educational Centre had toured to different cities to share to the audience the bitter lives of ex-dope heads, as well as examples of drug cases on campus. more

The 2009 National Intercollegiate Athletic Games hosted by NTNU had come to a successful end. In order to acknowledge and to express gratitude to the hard work of the staff, Principle Guo Yih-Shun held a gratitude evening party at Linkou campus. Besides delicious food, there were also live performances by students from the Department of Music to heat up the scene. Furthermore, there was also a lucky draw. Awards were drew one after one by Principle Guo. With the announcement of the first winner, Dean of Student Affairs Fan Jin-Long, the evening party was ready to reach to another climax. more

The 33rd Annual Pacific Circle Consortium Conference opened on May 26th at the College of Education Building, NTNU. This was the first time ever that the Pacific Circle Consortium Conference was held in Taiwan. This event thus had its significance other than its academic importance. Besides educationalists from all member countries, Zheng Rui-Chen, Minister of Education, was also there to show his respect to the organization. This consortium conference would last for three days, in which papers by scholars of different nationalities would be published and ideas of education would be exchanged. more

To encourage NTNU students to actively conduct researches related to European cultures and tourism, Professor Li Ping-Zi, former chairman of the French Language Center, has been donated scholarship to the graduate institute every year for outstanding students. This year, Chen Jin-Yu, a second year graduate student, and Jiang Yi-Ru, a first year graduate student, were awarded with 50 thousand dollars each. Professor Li was a NTNU alumna who went to France for further study. After her return to Taiwan, she became a professor at the English Department, NTNU. Li was the founder of French Language Center. more

Once a year, the Night at the Department of Civic Education and Leadership was held on May 19th with a stately manner. The theme this year was “The Drama of Our Department”. For full 4 hours, the audience can enjoy up to 7 performances: Each of the 2 classes from freshman to junior year would present one performance while the senior classes would present one jointly. The theme of this year’s Night at the Department of Civic Education and Leadership was themed in drama, but not exclusively. Dance, singing and live band performance were also part of the night. more

On May 16th and 17th, an international academic symposium on educational administration was held by the Graduate Institute of Educational Policy and Administration. On the opening ceremony, Huang Nai-Ying, chairman of the graduate institute, and Lu Mu-Lin, political deputy minister of the Department of Education, were there to give opening speeches. The symposium was entitled as “the Strength and Beauty of Educational Administration”. The strength referred to techniques and abilities, whereas the beauty referred to art and tactfulness of educational administration. Topics include: administrative ethics, administrative leading, policy planning, policy execution, policy review, administrative knowledge, educational finance, educational organization, educational marketing and educational competition. more

On May 19th, students from the Department of Health Education held an event to teach students how to differentiate different drugs and to avoid the harmful effects of drugs. The event was composed of games and lectures. By going through the three stages of games, participants could learn about the 4 categories of drugs and their effects, the three categories of the effect of drugs, and the addictive factor in drugs and how to prevent addiction. The cordial staff and their thorough explanation made learning fun and easy. The event ended with a lecture and a lucky draw. more
