Psychometric Models for Forced-Choice Assessments: Current and Future Developments

Jimmy de la Torre教授為美國伊利諾大學博士，現為香港大學教育學院教授，研究專長為測驗與評量技術、認知診斷模型、試題反應理論等。Jimmy de la Torre教授現為國際心理測量學會主席，曾擔任Journal of Educational Measurement等多個國際期刊的主編或副主編，曾獲頒美國教育測量學會Bradley Hanson Award。

演講摘要：
Forced-choice formats are widely used in psychological assessment to measure latent traits such as personality and interests while mitigating response distortions such as social desirability and faking. Based on the systematic review by Qiu and de la Torre (2026), this chapter focuses on recently developed psychometric models for forced-choice assessment within the dominance and ideal point frameworks, including emerging models based on cognitive diagnosis modeling. It also summarizes key research findings and empirical evidence related to three critical research questions in forced-choice assessment: the validity of scores obtained from forced-choice items, their comparability to normative Likert-type items, and their effectiveness in reducing response biases. In addition, this chapter presents applications of psychometric models for forced-choice assessment in real-world contexts, particularly differential item functioning and computerized adaptive testing. Finally, it discusses future research directions in this area.
