This international event brings together researchers interested in how the under-represented languages of East and Southeast Asia—such as Formosan, Philippine, Hakka, Ryukyuan, and Taiwan Sign Language—can deepen our understanding of psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, and language acquisition. Despite their theoretical richness, these languages remain largely absent from experimental research.

The conference opens with a hands-on workshop (November 7) exploring experimental methods in both lab and field settings, addressing challenges unique to working with marginalized languages, including insider/outsider dynamics and neurolinguistic tools such as EEG.

The following two days (November 8–9) feature sessions on language processing and structure—focusing on morphology, syntax, and temporal relations—as well as applied psycholinguistics, including language assessment, acquisition, and how linguistic and population diversity shape cognitive processing.

This event provides a rare platform to bridge theoretical insights and experimental methods in the context of some of the world’s most linguistically rich yet under-researched languages. In other words, by showcasing experimental work with linguistically rich but underexplored languages, this event offers researchers a rare opportunity to expand both theoretical and methodological horizons.

Open to the public, “MEALP-2025: Exploring Taiwan’s diversity and beyond” features 16 invited speakers:

Ina Bornkessel-Schlesewsky (University of South Australia);
