National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) President Gou Yih-shun (郭義雄) requested NTNU teachers and students to work harder, although NTNU is experiencing a difficulty of budget cut.
"As teachers, we need to know what students would need from us,” Gou said.
The president made his remarks during the inauguration for NTNU’s new department heads for different administrative and academic offices. A total of 25 professors took oath of their new offices.
Gou encouraged his fellow NTNU staff members to design and carry out as many sufficient courses as possible for students, and to re-design those unpopular courses completely, instead of simply changing required credits of them.
Meanwhile, the president mentioned that a complete stop of most campus activities at NTNU worried him very much.
"A long vacation like this should be a good chance for students and professors to do research projects or work out the problems they have encountered during the past semester but I can rarely see them do so at NTNU,” Gou said.
He said that NTNU is experiencing a budget cut by the Ministry of Education and this budget cut will leave no room for him to increase personnel because 70 percent of NTNU’s annual budget was paid to its employees. The president said that since the budget is being reduced, NTNU will have to relieve more adjunct professors of their jobs because to compare with other full-time faculties, these adjunct professors would not be able to establish intimate relationship with students due to their limited time for NTNU.
