Future National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) students will have opportunities to learn space related knowledge on the campus, as a new space program will be established and a new agreement was signed by NTNU and the National Space Organization (NSPO) at NTNU this morning.
The new program will be conducted by Department of Geography. It is a new program aimed to train students to be professional planners or researchers in the field. Only 40 students would be admitted to this program every year and they would have opportunities to learn related professional subjects, suc as remote sensing, satellite image processing and application, geography information system application, etc. A certificate after they finish 20 credits. Under the agreement with NTNU, NSPO will offer related equipment and personnel for teaching purposes for the program.
It was not the first-time cooperation relationship between NTNU and NSPO.
Under a separate contract with NSPO in 2004, the FORMOSAT-2 Image Application Distribue Center (IADC) was established and has been conducted by Department of Geography ever since. After recent Sichuan earthquake in China, NTNU researchers helped NSPO analyze pictures by the satellite and delivered the results to help rescuers in China.
"It is great for us to work with NSPO in education because our students will have more chances to practice what they learned in classes,” said Harry Chang (張國楨), director for IADC and an associate professor for Department of Geography.
In response, NSPO Director Miau Jiun-jih (苗君易) also said that NSPO would value the chance to work with NTNU because they also need young professionals to join their projects and help them with pictures from the satellite.
