Approximately 300 swimmers and audiences crowded the pool on the main campus today to launch the 2008 University Water Sports Day and welcome the official summer time at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU).
Office of Physical Education and Sports Director Jwo Jium-chem (卓俊辰) said that the Water Sports Day has been constantly held annually for 50 years. NTNU has helped develop numerous professional and non-professional swimmers who would easily become medalists when participating in swimming-related competitions.
"One of our purposes to continue this annual event is to encourage and inspire more swimming fans to take advantage of our state-of-the-art facilities on the campus and enjoy swimming,” Jwo said.
In addition to regular swimming match-ups for swimmers, non-swimmers would also have fun by participating in games of “treasure retriever” and “tug of the war in the water.”
Staff members from Department of Physical Education dropped more than 200 pieces of Chinese chess into the pool. Each piece was labeled and whoever collected more pieces would be able to win more prizes, including goggles, swim caps and socks.
