The Office of International Affairs (OIA) encouraged graduates students, especially those who are majoring in education, to take summer classes at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) during a seminar at the main campus today.
"Since we do not offer summer classes, we would encourage our students to take summer classes at UCLA and we would accept those credits then they return,” said Chuang Kun-liang (莊坤良), director for the OIA.
OIA said that opportunities of this summer program, including two classes and a workshop, would only be available to graduate students, especially those who are majoring in education. To join the program, the participant only has to sign up but she or he will have to pay the tuition fee of US$1,500. Also, unlike a regular exchange student program, whoever participates in the summer camp does not have to submit his TOEFL scores.
Chuang encouraged students whoever are interested in the offer to contact and ask for more details from their own academic advisors. In the meantime, he also encourage his fellow staff members to seek for more opportunities like this at other foreign universities for students whenever they have chances to communicate with foreign counterparts.
OIA launched the program last year, when Department of Education Prof. Chen Hsiao-lan (甄曉蘭) led a group of her students to UCLA for the summer.
"This program was designed for graduate students,” she said. “Unlike other exchange student program or other short-term summer camp which would focus on language learning or culture understanding, this one is for graduate students to brainstorm,” Chen said.
In addition to the summer camp at UCLA, Chen, at the same time, also encouraged her students to travel so they would have more opportunities to explore the city and the country.
"I think the entire idea to study at UCLA is a great one and we will definitely do it again next year,” she said.
