Music From the Underpass But Not Underground Music

Young talents’ weekly performances at the underpass that cross the Hoping East Rd. in front of the National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) during the past few weeks made the tunnel artistic.

Wang Hsin-lien (王馨漣), coordinator for the weekly performances, said that all the activities were planned and performed by NTNU Graduate Institute of Performing Arts students and sponsored by the Beringer Classic, as free fine wine and refreshments were offered at the scene.

"The original idea came from Jerry Hsia (夏學理), our professor,” Wang said.  “We began to plan all these since the end of October but we did not expect to have so many shows every week here.”

Wang said that their shows were more like a Broadway style live performance because most of the talents would present familiar and renowned music pieces during their weekly performances on Thursday nights.

"People who came to our shows may not have a chance to watch a show like this anywhere else in Taiwan,” she said.

Wang said that all her fellow students from the Graduate Institute of Performing Arts were doing the weekly performances as volunteers but they all had a good time doing it.

"It is a holiday season,” she said.  “We would like to do more performances that would be related to holidays and share the joy with our audiences.”
