Introduction of Speaker:

Dr. Chien-Te Chen received both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics from National Taiwan University and earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1985. After completing his doctoral studies, he joined Bell Labs in the United States, where he led a research group in soft X-ray spectroscopy for condensed matter physics. He was also responsible for the development and operation of the U4B beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS).

He developed the high-resolution, high-transmission soft X-ray “Dragon” beamline, which became an important instrument for precision studies in X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). In 1995, he returned to Taiwan and joined the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC), where he devoted many years to advancing synchrotron radiation science and technology in Taiwan. Following his retirement in 2023, he has served as Distinguished Research Fellow Emeritus at NSRRC and is also an Academician of Academia Sinica.

Dr. Chen specializes in condensed matter physics, soft X-ray spectroscopy, XMCD, and synchrotron instrumentation. His research has made important contributions to the study of semiconductors, high-temperature superconductors, magnetic materials, and transition-metal compounds. In 1995, he and his collaborators provided crucial experimental verification of the XMCD sum rules, demonstrating that integrated magnetic circular dichroism spectra can be used to determine the orbital and spin magnetic moments of materials.

This achievement has had a lasting impact on the study of magnetic materials. Beyond his scientific research, Dr. Chen has also been a key driver of Taiwan’s major research infrastructure. During his tenure, he promoted the upgrade of the Taiwan Light Source. He led the construction of the Taiwan Photon Source, completing one of the world’s leading 3 GeV synchrotron facilities on schedule. His work has laid a strong foundation for advanced research in materials science, physics, and life sciences in Taiwan, making him one of the most influential figures in the development of synchrotron radiation science and condensed matter physics in the country.
