Infusing Imagination into Science Problem Solving

Asia-Pacific Forum for Science Talented (APFst) hosted by K-12 Education Administration, Ministry of Education, Taiwan and organized by National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) is designed to provide middle and high school students with opportunities to get to know each other, showcase their talent, and work collaboratively. Targeted participants are middle high school talented students who are aged 13-16. Each participating country or region is invited to send a delegation consisting of a team of up to two teachers and six students. English is used as the conference language.

The APFst event has been held twice in the summer so far. This year’s APFst will operate again at the NTNU campus from Saturday 1 July to Thursday 6 July 2017 with stimulating speakers and interesting activities.

The 2017 APFst is much larger, with participants from the Asia-Pacific region and the world. The event will bring together 93 students and 34 teachers from 15 countries and regions, including Canada, Denmark, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Russia, Vietnam, and Taiwan. Two senior officials from Ministry of Education in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will attend the forum this year.

Professor Ching-Chih Kuo, Department of Special Education, NTNU and the Chairperson of the APFst Organizing Committee, says that supporting the New Southern Policy of the government and International Day of the Gifted, the 2017 APFst is a possibility of cross-border cooperation and cross-border friendship that will be established and strengthened during group discussions.

The 2017 APFst has the theme “Imagination and Future Scientists” and the program had an array of activities highlighting this theme. For example, the opening ceremony will take place at R202 of General Building, NTNU at 15:00 on Saturday 1 July. Don’t miss the multicultural show at the opening ceremony and we believe that students from different countries will be creative in the way showing their amazing performance. The keynote speech on the second day, 2 July, will be by Director-General Professor Wei-Hsin Sun, National Museum of Natural Science on the topic of “Exploring the Final Frontier- An Effort for Humans to Become a Multiplanetary Species”. The speech is designed to widen the participants’ perspectives and diversify their views on natural science. The multinational team-based hands-on project will allow student delegates to engage in discussion related to science for social concern, and to help familiarize them with the roles of global citizens. The teacher symposium in the afternoon of 2 July with 6 invited speakers provides opportunities to strengthen international relations and encourage cooperation. The teacher forum session will let the teacher delegates share ideas and show how they infuse imagination into their teaching practices.
