In recognition of his contributions to optics in the field of holography, Chau-Jern Cheng, Distinguished Professor at the NTNU Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering, was inducted into the International Order of Holoknights — an elite group of holographers from around the world.
The International Order of Holoknights was founded in 1988 by Dr. Hans Rottenkolber, a pioneer in the field of holography. One new member is annually selected based on their international recognition within the elite community. To date, a total of 30 individuals worldwide have been granted the title of “Holoknight” since 1988.'
In congratulating Chau-Jern Cheng on receiving the Holoknight Award, Dr. Bernhard Kress, SPIE President and fellow Holoknight, declares and proclaims the immense contribution of Chau-Jern Cheng to the entire community of enlightened individuals. He confers upon him all privileges and honors as a Member of the Order and grants him the title 'Sir Chau-Jern of Taipei' along with the Sword of Holoknight – Champion of Holography. Professor Chau-Jern Cheng is one of only five Holoknights in Asia.
This year, the Holoknight presentation was held in conjunction with the SPIE Optical Metrology and the World of Photonics event in Munich, Germany. Following tradition, Chau-Jern Cheng was granted the title of 'Holoknight' by last year’s recipient, Bernhard Kress.
'Receiving this prestigious award was absolutely unexpected and a total surprise for me,' stated Chau-Jern. 'I owe this to my parents, family, teachers, students, and all my colleagues from around the world whose help and support have been key to my work and this recognition.'
Prof. Cheng is a leader in the field of modern holography and optics. His research interests include information optics, optical metrology, digital and computer-generated holography, deep learning and related fields. He has authored over 130 publications. In recognition of his work on modern holography, he received the International Holoknight Award in 2023.
