Higher education institutes around the world are affected by the epidemic this year and are forced to take on digital transformation. National Taiwan Normal University participated in the 2020 EdTech Taiwan, held from December 2nd to 6th to demonstrate our professional development and research results on the epidemic prevention on campus, Chinese language teaching, computing thinking, information science, science education, AI application literacy courses. Impressed by Self-developed Day-pass System, Acer Visited NTNU |

With the spreading of coronavirus, it is a global challenge to combat the virus. Director Cheng from our long-time partner, Acer AEB, visited Executive Vice President Greg Chung-Mou Lee in a group of five to discuss the Day-pass system, a project led by Vice President Lee. Since March 2020, NTNU has started using the system Day Pass for security concern. Visitors can scan the QR code at entrance for a one-day pass, when they get to their destination, they can check in at the unit visited as a record of campus footprint. The process is easy, quick, and paperless.more |

2020 Asia-Pacific Education Held Online |

The goal of Asia-Pacific Association for Teacher Education, an association initiated by the College of Education of NTNU, is to develop teacher education and teacher training strategies in the Asia-Pacific area. This year, the forum, held on November 13, is moved online but the discussion remain heated. The Forum aims to provide a platform for participants from various countries in the Asia-Pacific region to share their educational experiences and inspire possible cross-border academic cooperation.more |

Online Forum of Asian Youth Education Development in 2020 |

The Division of Preparatory Programs for Overseas Chinese Students organized the 2019 Asian Youth Education Development-Secondary School Principal Forum last year, inviting principals from Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Myanmar to Taiwan to discuss the current situation of secondary education and topics on school management, which were highly praised by the attendants. Therefore, this year, the Division organized the "Asian Youth Education Development in 2020: Secondary School Progression Policy and Approach Forum-Internationalization Experience Dialogue". With the impact of the Covid-19, it is decided that the forum will take place online.more |

2020 Special Education International Conference at NTNU to Promote Inclusion Education |

Inclusion in education refers to a model wherein students with special needs spend most or all their time with non-special needs students. Since 1990s, inclusion education has become prominent in special education. In order to promote the theoretical development of inclusion education and the exchange of experience in the Asia-Pacific region, the Special Education Center of National Taiwan Normal University was commissioned by the Ministry of Education to conduct the "2020 Special Education International Conference: Inclusive Education and Career Development " from November 2 to 4. Special education scholars and experts in Taiwan and abroad were invited to attend the forum online.

Butterfly Fauna of Taiwan by Prof. Hsu Yu Feng Gain Recognition Worldwide |

Cooperated with Forestry Bureau, Prof. Hsu Yu Feng of the Department of Science edited the Vol. IV Lycaenidae of the Butterfly Fauna of Taiwan in September, a bilingual book written by Taiwanese. 120 species of butterflies are listed in the book and most of them are not on books available in the market. According to the Forestry Bureau, this is the latest great book after they have published Papilionidae, Pieridae and Hesperiidae.more |

Number of Double Major and Minor in NTNU Increased Due to Change of System |

In response to social development and the need for cross-disciplinary talents, National Taiwan Normal University encourages students to learn in different departments as double major and minor. The original audition system will be replaced by registration. The number of students as double major and minor increased significantly. It is expected that more than 50% of students will enroll in courses from different department by 2025. In addition, the National Taiwan University system is working on cross-university enrollment. Last year, a student from the Department of Taiwan Culture, Languages and Literature was admitted to the Department of Construction Engineering in National Taiwan University of Science and Technology.more |

Taiwan Team ranked 6th in 2020 International Olympiad in Informatics |

The Taiwan team, trained by professors of NTNU, had a good showing at the 32nd International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). A total of 87 countries and 343 participants are in this game. The Taiwan team got three silver and one bronze, the one of the 18 counties that receive 4 medals and we are ranked as number 6 according to total points.

AI2 Robot City from Prof. Hsu Ting Chia Awarded the Future Tech Award |

The team of AI 2 Robot City, led by Prof. Hsu Ting Chia from the Department of Technology Application and Human Resources Application, was given the Future Tech Award by the Ministry of Technology. AI2 Robot City is a game-based learning kit for primary and secondary school students, which combines AI image-recognition teaching tool of MIT App Inventor and the computational thinking board game Robot City. Through this learning kit, users will learn to make smart cars, create image-recognition models, write and perform mobile application. Users will learn to write a program to recognize the personal cards in the board game, and furthermore to control the smart cars with blue-tooth and compete in the computational thinking board game.

Record breaking Patent Transfer Fee at NTNU from the Dept. of Chemistry |

It’s proven fact that free radicals attack cells, acerating aging and even cause cancer. Prof. Lee Way Zen from the Department of Chemistry spent ten years to developing artificial enzyme, superoxide dismutase, that helps break down potentially harmful oxygen molecules in cells. This is the first anti superoxide radical element that can be kept in room temperature. This key technology has received eight patent approvals in seven countries and the technology is transferred to Ti-UNic Biotech for producing cosmetics. more |

The International Outlook of NTNU, best in Taiwan Universities in Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020/2021 |

Times Higher Education has announced the latest World University Rankings 2020/2021 in early September and National Taiwan Normal University is ranked 606th in the world, 46 places higher than last year. A closer look at the various indicators reveals that NTNU's score for International Outlook remains top 1 in Taiwan. The score of our Research results rose dramatically, which proves that the measures taken for improving the quality of paper and internationalization are effective ones.more |

Chair Prof. and Alumna Shu-mei Shih Appointed as Edward W. Said Professor |

Chair professor and outstanding alumnus of NTNU, Prof. Shih Shu Mei was appointed the inaugural Edward W. Said Professor of Comparative Literature at UCLA in mid-July. Prof. Shih is tremendously important in the development of Taiwan studies in UCLA. A graduate from the English Department, she initiated the collaboration and mutual exchange opportunities between UCLA and NTNU. What’s more, the annual event of Taiwan studies was also held in UCLA. Prof. Shih said that Taiwan studies has been decentralized for many years, it’s her honor to be given the title and hopes to fight for more attention academically.more |

Possible Breakthrough of semiconductor manufacturing |

As 3nm process manufacturing kicked-off, the development is not as smooth as expected. Associate Professor Lan Yann Wen and Postdoctoral researcher Chun I. Lu from the Department of Physics at National Taiwan Normal University participated in the Taiwan-German cross-border research team formed by the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC). They have studied the "Cobalt/Molybdenum Disulfide Heterostructure" and found that through heterostructure "orbital hybridization", "spontaneous magnetic anisotropy" may be produced. If it is used in electronic components in the future, the development of semiconductor and optoelectronic industries may reach a breakthrough.more |

The eighth and ninth president of the Republic of China and the alumni of the Taihoku High School, Former President Lee Teng Hui, died at Taipei Veterans General Hospital on July 30, 2020, age 98. The news shocked people all over the world. Leaders such as US Secretary of State Pompeo, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and current President Tsai Ing-wen all expressed their condolences. The history of former President Lee leading Taiwan to the road to democracy is quite an emotional one.more |

President Wu Presents Flag to MTC Dragon Boat Team |

Due to the impact of the epidemic, the dragon boat races this year in Taiwan have been scaled down. The MTC Dragon boat is composed of students from across the world but many foreign students cannot come to Taiwan this year. To continue the 44-year tradition, experienced teammates shouldered the responsibility and picked up the paddles again.
