| National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) and its strategic partner of Pennsylvania State University (PSU) signed a collaboration agreement for “Taiwan Hauyu BEST program” on November 1, 2021 to promote Chinese language instruction and learning through academic cooperation and exchange of visiting scholars and students supported by NTNU Overseas Mandarin Training Center. NTNU will annually send two Chinese language instructors on exchange to PSU, while PSU students come to NTNU for in-depth Chinese language study and to provide English language tutorials to local elementary schools in New Taipei City. more |

Coffee Helps Relieve Muscle Soreness Caused by Exercise, Making you Stronger |

| Promoting athletic performance through nutritional supplementation has been a popular research topic in sports science, and caffeine has been proven in many studies to be a legitimate supplement that can effectively enhance aerobic and anaerobic performance. However, whether caffeine, which also has an analgesic effect, can be effective in reducing muscle strength performance when the exercise causes delayed muscle soreness in the case of supplementation, and whether the effect has gender differences, has not been clarified. Therefore, we designed an experiment in which a downhill running caused running-induced delayed muscle soreness with male and female athletes, followed by caffeine supplementation of about three cups of American coffee, and observed the degree of muscle soreness change and muscle strength performance. The results showed that caffeine supplementation was effective in terms of reducing the muscle pain of both male and female athletes, but the degree of reduction in pain was higher in men than in women. Both men and women, however, can benefit from the same supplement of coffee that reduces the maximum loss of muscle strength. If you have muscle soreness and want to exercise, drink some coffee next time.more |

The 2021 World Archery Championships took place at Yankton in South Dakota. Taiwan's men's recurve bow archery team is mainly made up of NTNU alumni and students, including Coach Lee Tao Ming, Athelte Wei Chun Heng, Hung Cheng Hao are all from the Department of Athletic Performance. Wei just received silver medal from the 2020 Olympics and is now studying PhD in NTNU. He is the first NTNU trained athlete to receive a silver medal at the Olympics. Now, with Yu Guan Lin and Hung Cheng Hao and teammates, Taiwan’s men’s recurve team bagged bronze at 2021 World Archery Championships on September 25th.more |

Transformers in The Porous Materials Field: Extremely Fast Lattice Rearrangement of the MOF Structures |

| In this work, we present a case system that can achieve rapid structural rearrangement of the whole lattice of a metal–organic framework (MOF) through a ‘domino’ alteration of the bond connectivity under mild conditions. Topological transitions between significantly different phases typically require extreme conditions to collectively break chemical bonds and overcome the stress caused to the original structure by altering its correlated bond environment. Our system transforms from a disordered and less crystalline MOF with low porosity to a highly crystalline and porous isomer within few minutes upon activation (solvent exchange and desorption), resulting in a significant increase in surface area, from 725 to 2,749 m2/g. Spectroscopic measurements show that this counter-intuitive lattice rearrangement involves a metastable intermediate with defect frameworks that results from solvent removal on coordinately unsaturated metal sites. This less crystalline–crystalline switch between two topological distinct MOFs is shown to be reversible over four cycles through activation and re-immersion in polar solvents. The aim of this study was to investigate the partial defects in real MOF crystalline structures and to focus on defect-induced MOF properties, which are expected to enhance and develop the physical, mechanical, electronic and optical material properties and chemical activities of MOF materials. This research adopted an exploratory experimental procedure that facilitated the synthesis of highly porous MOFs, which were previously not easy to synthesize, and functional applications for defective and highly porous MOFs were further developed.more |

| Since NTU System established in 2014, the interaction of teacher and students between the three universities has risen. Since 2017, students are allowed to enroll for intercollegiate programs in NTU System. Since 2019, students are allowed to take minors in NTU System. The students shown positive feedback and the spots for each departments raised every year. Since 2021, double majors at NTU and NTNU became available to students. The number has shown significant increase, from 2,535 in 2015 to 7,481 in 2020. Over the past 6 years, 33,279 participants have attended course from a different university.more |

The 2021 Taiwan-Philippines University Presidents’ Virtual Forum was held on August 24th by Taiwan Education Center Philippines and Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges under the theme of Language Education and International Linkage Under Covid-19. Executive Vice President Frank Yung-Hsiang Ying attended the forum representing NTNU, to understand the latest development of higher education in the Philippines and gave a talk about the Building Bilingual Environment in NTNU. About 70 representatives from 64 higher education institutes from Taiwan and 119 representatives from 107 higher education institutes attended the forum, making it the biggest online forum of Taiwan-Philippines higher education.

The research team of the Founding Deam of the School of Life Science Chien Chiang Ting published recent results and discovered the research of the virus activity. Polyphenol catechins extracted from green tea can inhibit virus replication, strengthen the immune mechanism and improve various acute lung destruction. It can be used as a tool to prevent the spread of the virus and can effectively reduce the symptoms disease. The paper was published on journal Antioxidants in July.

Can happiness be taught? |

| In order to teach students to live happily, Wellington College in England pioneered the happiness curriculum. The purpose of this article is to analyze the concept of happiness in the book "Teaching Happiness and Well-being in Schools" by Ian Morris, a representative figure of the British happiness curriculum, in order to judge whether happiness can be taught. The paper points out that Morris' perspective of happiness has undergone transformation, beginning with a direct inheritance from positive psychology, and emphasizing the adjustment of the subject's mindset. In the middle stage, he adopts Aristotle's theory of happiness in action, regarding happiness as a natural feeling and state experienced after activities by the subject. In the latter stage, it is clearly asserted that happiness is an activity according to virtue and that the happiness curriculum should be the foundation of character education. Overall, the Morris Happiness curriculum can be seen as a complex of positive psychology and Aristotle's theory of happiness. Basically, the modules of the well-being curriculum are drawn from the key themes of positive psychology at the beginning, emphasizing that students learn happiness skills that have been proven to be effective, and then changing to underline that these themes must be connected to the development of personal virtue. At this point, happiness lessons and character education become inseparable. This article concludes that happiness can be taught and needs to be taught, but that given the multiplicity of happiness, it is also necessary to examine the concept of happiness reflected in the teaching of happiness from a philosophical perspective. more |
