NTNU Leads Effort to Save Endangered Butterfly

National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) has launched a conservation initiative on Orchid Island (Lanyu) to protect one of Taiwan's most endangered butterfly species, the Birdwing Butterfly (Troides magellanus). The launch is in collaboration with Japanese researchers, Indigenous community members, an alumni-founded Taiwanese pharmaceutical company, and local schools.

Prof. Yu-Feng Hsu of NTNU's Department of Life Sciences invited Dr. Yago Masaya and Dr. Shen Zong-Yu from the Laboratory of Insect Natural History at the University of Tokyo Museum to conduct fieldwork together in Lanyu. Together, the international team focused on habitat restoration and species recovery for the Birdwing Butterfly. This species depends entirely on a single host plant found only on Orchard Island's coastal margins.

The Birdwing Butterfly's larvae feed exclusively on Aristolochia zollingeriana, a vine native to the shrublands and forest edges along Orchid Island's coastline. Habitat degradation and the plant's extremely limited distribution have caused a sharp decline in butterfly populations, pushing the species onto Taiwan's protected species list. Restoring the butterfly means restoring its ecosystem, an effort towards fulfilling the UN Sustainable Development Goals of Climate Action (SDG 13), Life on Land (SDG 15), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).

A Model of Cross-Sector Collaboration

The initiative, formally titled the Orchid Island Birdwing Butterfly ESG Ecological Restoration Program, exemplifies NTNU's commitment to University Social Responsibility (USR). Prof. Hsu's team partnered with Dr. Wu-Chang Chuang, an alumnus of NTNU's Department of Chemistry and General Manager of Sun Ten Pharmaceutical, to fund and supply seedlings of the host plant through Sun Ten's agricultural subsidiary. Local Tao Indigenous community member Syamankamatahen was engaged to replant the host vine within butterfly habitats, ensuring that restoration work is carried out with Indigenous knowledge and community ownership at its core.

This tripartite model of linking university research, corporate resources, and Indigenous participation directly embodies SDG 17's vision of multi-stakeholder partnerships for sustainable development, while also supporting SDG 8 by creating locally grounded economic opportunities through ecological stewardship and eco-tourism.

Education, Community, and Indigenous Culture

Additionally, in partnership with the Taiwan Orchid Island Cultural and Educational Development Association, the Tao Foundation, and Iraraley Elementary School, NTNU has developed ecological education curricula introducing local children to butterfly conservation and biodiversity. This dimension of the project advances SDG 4 on Quality Education, ensuring that children in one of Taiwan's most geographically remote communities benefit from hands-on environmental learning connected to their own natural and cultural heritage.

Prof. Chung-Hsin Wu, Director of NTNU's Sustainable Development Office, emphasized that the project is designed to generate cascading benefits: restoring the Birdwing Butterfly population strengthens broader ecosystem resilience, while integrating Tao Indigenous cultural values into conservation practice enhances Orchid Island's identity and potential as an eco-tourism destination. These objectives contribute to sustainable community development (SDG 11).

NTNU's Approach to Sustainability

The Orchid Island initiative displays NTNU's broader approach to USR: combining world-class research with genuine local partnership, and connecting Taiwan's academic expertise to global sustainability frameworks. NTNU's Sustainable Development Office has committed to expanding the program through ongoing population monitoring, wider educational outreach, and the development of a long-term, stable conservation network. Partnership with the University of Tokyo underscores NTNU's capacity to mobilize international scientific collaboration in service of local conservation challenges, reflecting the University's conviction that the most pressing environmental problems require both global knowledge and deeply local action.
