Leaders from 50 Universities to Gather at Taiwan-France Higher Education Leaders Forum

The 2024 Taiwan-France Higher Education Leaders Forum, scheduled for March 11-12, will convene at the NTNU Assembly Hall on the Heping Campus. This forum is a collaborative effort involving NTNU and the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan (FICHET), the Bureau Français de Taipei, and Campus France.

As the largest international forum in higher education post-COVID-19, the event will assemble more than 100 directors and administrators of international affairs as well as 12 university presidents from 50 universities across France and Taiwan. Participants will include presidents from prominent French institutions such as the University of Bordeaux, the University of Lille, the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne, the University of La Rochelle, and the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO), as well as their Taiwanese counterparts from NTNU, National Taiwan University (NTU), National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST), National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), and National Taipei University of Technology (NTUT).

Focusing on Taiwan-France cooperation under global impact, the forum aims to explore avenues for bilateral exchanges in areas such as university internationalization, scientific research, industry-academia collaboration, talent development, and language education; with the objective of deepening partnerships between Taiwan and France and enriching further academic research and cooperation.

The event will open with remarks from Deputy Minister of Education Dr. Mon-Chi Lio; Taiwan's Representative to France Chih-Chung Wu; Chairman of FICHET and NTNU President Cheng-Chih Wu; Director of the Bureau Français de Taipei (BFT) Frank Paris; Deputy Director General of Campus France Beatrice Khaiat; and Vice President of France Universités Guillaume Gellé.

The morning sessions will focus on 'The Internationalization of Higher Education in Taiwan and France' and 'Taiwan’s Perspectives on Technological Development and Industry-Academia Cooperation.' Keynote speakers include Deputy Director Kao-Hsien Liao of the MOE Department of International and Cross-strait Education (DICE), President Wen-Chang Chen of NTU, and Deputy Director-General Khaiat from Campus France.

The first afternoon session on March 11 will spotlight 'Taiwan-France Scientific Cooperation and Talent Cultivation,' with insights from NTHU President W. John Kao and University of Bordeaux President Dean Lewis. This will be followed by panel discussion on the Erasmus Mundus Program and the European Universities initiative, moderated by NTNU Vice President Yung-Hsiang Ying. French panelists Carle Bonafous-Murat, Representative of France Universités in Brussels, President Jean-Marc Ogier of University of la Rochelle, and Coordinator Alexandre Wallard of the European Master Medical Technology and Healthcare Business Erasmus Mundus Program (EMMaH) University of Lille, will assess how these initiatives can develop and enhance collaborative partnerships between universities in Taiwan and France.The forum's first day will conclude with closing remarks from DICE Director General Dr. Nicole Yen-Yi Lee.

A special session scheduled for March 12 will highlight the critical role of universities in educating and promoting Chinese and French as global languages. This session, moderated by FICHET Executive Director Yun-Hua Yang, will include presentations and discussions by l'INALCO President Jean-François Huchet; Vice-President for International Relations Nil Toulouse from University of Lille; NTNU Vice President for International Affairs Yi-De Liu; and Dr. Jean-Yves Heurtebise, Chair of the Department of French Language and Culture at Fu Jen Catholic University.

Following one and a half days of academic exchange, the event organizers will for international guests to tour the Mandarin Training Center, the French Language Center, and the Art Museum at NTNU, as well as to visit the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and National Taiwan University (NTU).
