Best Global Universities Announced by U.S. News & World Report

National Taiwan Normal University Ranked 9th in Best Global Universities for Education and Educational Research

In a recent evaluation released by the U.S. News & World Report of the best global universities, National Taiwan Normal University is ranked 9th in Best Global Universities for Education and Educational Research. Its place alongside Harvard and Stanford among the top ten in the world also raises the international profile of Taiwan’s research ability.

The Best Global Universities Rankings by U.S. News is based on a wide range of indicators that measure each university’s academic research performance, publication numbers, and citations made, etc. In the new category of Education and Educational Research added last year, NTNU is ranked 9th overall and 6th in the world for normalized citation impact. It is also ranked 8th for percentage of total publications that are among the top 10% of most cited papers in education and educational research. For total citation overall, NTNU is ranked 11th.

The data of the U.S. News ranking system is provided by Clarivate Analytics and aggregated by the InCites dataset spanning the past five years (2016-2020). It shows how long-term cultivation in the field of education by National Taiwan Normal University has been producing fruit. Not only is NTNU ranked second in Asia, it is able to stand in company with other top universities around the world to lead in the field of education.

Deep Engagement by the College of Education in Academic Research with Diverse and Rich Research Capacity

Before NTNU’s present state, it was founded as Taihoku High School in 1922. In 1946, it became Taiwan Provincial Teachers College with the mission to produce well-qualified secondary school teachers. In 1955, the College was officially reconstituted as Taiwan Provincial Normal University and then promoted in 1967 to become National Taiwan Normal University, a national institution that was officially designated as a comprehensive university since 1994. Both the alumni and faculty at NTNU have labored diligently in the field of education throughout the years to not only nurture countless talents for the country but also share Taiwan’s expertise in education with the rest of the world.

Dean of the College of Education Tien Hsiu-lan said that in the area of research and development in education and fostering talents, National Taiwan Normal University has five TSSCI journals among the education-related journals it has published thus far and 11 of them are listed in the Scopus database; the research community at home and abroad hold NTNU’s academic reputation in high esteem. The abundant research potential of the University’s teachers and researchers is consistently demonstrated through the excellent quality of their published papers.

Cross-Disciplinary Undergraduate Program Removes Academic Obstacles to Nurture Interdisciplinary Education Professionals

Centers overseen by the College of Education, such as The Chinese Language and Technology Center, Institute for Research Excellence in Learning Sciences and Social Emotional Education Development Center, have been granted funding through the SPROUT project of the Ministry of Education. These top centers lead the way for the research and development of global educational research.

Besides its diverse and rich research capacity, NTNU’s College of Education established in 2018 the School of Learning Informatics, the first of its kind in Taiwan. The School systematically integrates cross-disciplinary information-related institutions, including the Graduate Institute of Information and Computer Education, Graduate Institute of Library & Information Studies, and Program of Learning Science. It actively recruits excellent teachers in the fields of integrated education, psychology, business management, information, statistics as well as digital learning, computer science, learning science, and library information.

The Transdisciplinary Program, offered in the College of Education since 2019, combines instruction from teachers of various disciplines with resources from around the world to enable students to gain interdisciplinary knowledge and experience in international exchange. The program structure exemplifies the College of Education’s effort to remove academic barriers and expand the impact of teaching and research in the education profession.

Overall, not only is National Taiwan Normal University ranked 9th in the U.S. News Best Global Universities for Education and Educational Research but it is also ranked 26th in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. Since QS started the ranking of the Education Subject, NTNU has ranked among the top 50 in the world nine times and it has beensteadily climbing in said ranking year after year for the past four years. Among the other QS categories, NTNU’s academic reputation, citations per faculty, and employer reputation have also significantly improved.
