Deputy Trade Representative Philip Ong Visits NTNU to Discuss Bilingual Education

As NTNU being one of the Keys Cultivation University for Program on Bilingual Education, announced in September, Deputy Trade Representative Philip Ong of the Singapore Trade Office in Taipei visited NTNU on October 7 and had a discussion on the strength of Taiwanese and Singaporeans with President Wu Cheng Chih, Vice President for International Affairs Lin Chun Chi and Associate Vice President Liu Yu Ting.

In accordance with the Blueprint for Developing Taiwan into a Bilingual Nation by 2030, the Ministry of Education carried out the Program on. Bilingual Education for Students in College, which started in September this year, hoping to establish a bilingual learning environment to improve the English ability of students.

During the meeting, President Wu said that the key concept of bilingual education at NTNU is not for an English-speaking life but a tool for Taiwan to enter the global world. He said that many professors at NTNU are capable of teaching in English and the EMI(English as a Medium of Instruction) trainings will be available in the future. Students are facing the challenge of how to be resourceful and become competitive internationally. Deputy Trade Representative Philip Ong said that Singapore is a place for mixed culture. In recent years, many universities choose English as main language. He hopes for more experience sharing from Singapore to assist Taiwan in the path of bilingual learning. Vice President for International Affairs Lin Chun Chi said that it could be nice to increase the exchange opportunities for students from both sides. Associate Vice President Liu Yu Ting said that NTNU can provide language teachers for students to learn the language systematically.
