Third Asia Pacific International Conference on Positive Behavior Support Held Online

With the support of Association for Positive Behavior Support, the third Asia Pacific International Conference on Positive Behavior Support was hosted by Department of Special Education, NTNU and College of Teacher Education. The online seminar was held on September 17 and 18, with almost 300 participants from nine countries. Invited by Association for Positive Behavior Support (APBS) Professor Hung Li Yu was the coordinator at the APBS Network in Taiwan, responsible for introducing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to Taiwan and establish a cross-border communication platform for Asia-Pacific countries.

Prof. Hung was the chairperson at the first Asia Pacific International Conference on Positive Behavior Support in 2016. She serves as the chairperson again this year, which was scheduled to take place in 2020. It was postponed due to COVID-19 and was held online. At the opening session, ABPS Conference Chair Prof. Donald Kincaid introduced the idea of APBS. Dean of College of Education Chen Hsueh Chih gave a welcoming remark for scholars and practitioners around the world.

Emeritus Professor George Sugai at the University of Connecticut is the first speaker of the seminar and one of the prime leaders of PBIS. He combines multi-tiered system of supports and the framework of PBIS. The second speaker, Prof. Joseph Lucyshyn is from the University of British Columbia. He talks about Culturally Responsive PBS with a Family of Taiwanese Cultural and Linguistic Backgrounds and invite audience to ask questions. The third one comes from Catherine Bradshaw, Professor and the Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development at the University of Virginia talks about the prevention of campus bullying.

Prof. Hank Bohanon and Prof. Meng-Jia Wu from Loyola University of Chicago shared their practices at middle school. They discussed about the role of school improvement planning in the implementation of MTSS in secondary schools. A total of 28 presentation or poster presentation was given at this conference. At the closing ceremony, Director of APBS Dianna Yip talks about the next APBS conference. Prof. Kanako Otsui announced that the fourth APBS conference will be held in Japan in 2023.
