Prof. Huang Hsin Chien at the Department of Design of NTNU was the National Winner of Best Immersive in Asian Academy Creative Awards for his work of Kuo Hsueh-Hu: Three States of Home Gazing

Kuo Hsueh Hu is the most important gouache painter in Taiwan and was born in the Dadaocheng area of Taipei. In the year of 1964, Kuo migrated to Japan. Then his eldest son Kuo Song-Fen, who studied in the United States, participated in the Defend the Diaoyu Islands movement, which was then put on the “blacklist”. With less time spent together with his own flesh and blood, Kuo’s family then migrated to the United States to reunite in his later years.

Kuo Hsueh-hu was one of the first artists who depicted everyday Taiwanese culture and scenery in grand paintings. Deeply inspired by the daily life and natural scenery of Taiwan, his 1930 work 'Festival on South Street” illustrates a historical scene in Taipei that arouses a sense of nostalgia among older generations.

In Extended Reality, artists Huang transforms the journey of home into three phases of home gazing, the mind, the eye, and the spirit. These are based on the works of Kuo Hsueh Hu. The first one is the work of sunset Chihkan Tower in 1986 the second one is Colorful Boats on the Tan Chiang River(1982) and the third one is Festival on South Street(1930). In the journey of memory along with the passage of time, we sail in the junk boat and arrived Dadaocheng area. The viewer can experience the hustle and bustle scenery of Festival on South Street with a cell phone in hand and the help of AR.
