NTNU signed an MOU with the University of California, Berkeley. UB Berkeley will send 3 university students from the Dept. of chemistry to NTNU. This is a great opportunity for students to learn from each other academically, broaden their horizon and it’s also a good start for cooperation.
The University of California, Berkeley is a public research university located in Berkeley, California. Founded in 1868, Berkeley is one of the ten research universities affiliated with the University of California system and is ranked as one of the world's
leading research universities and the top public university in the United States. Berkeley alumni, faculty and researchers include 94 Nobel laureates and 19 of them are chemistry Nobel Prize winners. In Academic Ranking of World Universities 2017, UC Berkeley is ranked number 5th.
The signing ceremony was held at UB Berkeley on October 2nd. Vice President Wu Cheng Chi and Dean Chen Kwun Min of the College of Science went to the signing ceremony. Douglas Clark, Dean of College of Chemistry, Prof. Peidong Yang from Dept. of Chemistry represented UC Berkeley. Hsu Huei-Wen, Director of Education Division Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco was invited as guest. The administrators visited Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Paul Alivisatos and Vice President Tsu-Jae King Liu to discuss future cooperation in academic.
Starting from 2018, 3 students can go to UC Berkeley each year to attend the 6 week summer course and receive US$6,000. This is based on the BERS Program, which is about experiments. Students can use the appliances in the Dean of College. Different talks will be given each week. Students can visit laborites like Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. At the end of the summer course, there will be a presentation. The summer course will be held at UC Berkeley from July 2nd to August 10th, 2018.
Thanks to Prof. Chia-Chun Jay Chen, the cooperation was successful. Prof. Chen is in charge of a project about cooperation between NTNU and UC Berkeley. NTNU will provide scholarship for students from UC Berkeley to apply.
In addition to signing the MOU with UC Berkeley, vice president Wu also visited Stanford University and alumni in North California.
