Sending Future Teachers Abroad with Grants from the Government

This year, the ministry of Education first granted the oversea educational internship program and the list was revealed in January 18th. Three projects from NTNU pass the selection and was granted 2.75 million. The destination of the projects are Canada, Shanghai and Singapore.
In order to broaden the horizon of future teachers, to increase their cultural understanding and experiences, the ministry of education enacted the “Ministry of Education Grants Universities with teacher education Sending Students Abroad for Internship in Foreign Education Institutes below Senior High School Project” with the concept of Bordeless teacher and the project was valid on August 8th. This encourages universities that has teaching programs to send students to intern at school abroad as well as spreading the specialty of Taiwanese education.
The projects that receive the grants are very creative. For example, one projects suggest that NTNU students can go to Singapore for internship, The 12 students and 1 teacher receive 690 thousand. Another one suggest that students can study at Shanghai, 12 students and 1 teacher receive 760 thousands. The other plans to go to the University of British Columbia to learn from each other and receive training. 12 students and 1 teacher receive 1.3 million.
In accordance with the “New Southbound Policy”, projects that intend to go to schools in South East Asia are prior to be accepted. There are 20 granted projects in total, sending 165 students to Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore and Indonesia.
The ministry of education hope that universities that provides educational program can bring a positive change to the teacher training environment in Taiwan. Aside from students, if the project coordinator can teach what’s learned from this experience to students in Taiwan, it could be a win-win situation for everyone.
