Taipei 6th-graders' English Not up to Snuff

A new study finds that Taipei elementary schoolers' English is not up to

snuff.

According to research by the National Taiwan Normal University, one fifth of
all sixth graders in the city do not meet the minimum English ability
recommendations for graduating elementary school.

That number climbs to half when it comes to grammar and sentence structure.

NTNU researchers say this leaves the students unprepared for further English
education in middle school and beyond, and could lead them to give up on the
language altogether.

The researchers suggest local governments increase the amount of class time
devoted to English, to ensure that most students are at least competent in
the language.
