Practicum in Indonesia, A New Experience for Pre-service Teachers

To encourage our pre-service teachers to go to different places and to see the world, Prof. Jamie Chang from the College of Teacher Education initiated a program of practicum at Jakarta Taipei School, with the support of the Office of Teacher Education and Careers Service. The practicum took place in two places, 4 months in Taiwan and 2 months abroad.
6 pre-service teachers, elected from different departments among all students, went to Jakarta Taipei School for a two-month visit. They not only went there as an observer but also practice teaching.
Hong Chia Bing from the Department of Education said that students in Jakarta Taipei School is good at critical thinking. They have plans for the future and seeking for opportunities. Huang Yi Hsuan, now a master student at the Department of Education, founded that they are facing a problem of declining students' enrollment and also a shortage of Taiwanese teachers. As a result, the teachers need to take care of students in different age groups. Wang Ya Ming, from English Department, said that the students are Indonesian Chinese, Taiwanese and Indonesian. Different languages are spoken in the campus, which is a sign of Internationalization.
Liao Chi Wei, from the Chinese Department, found out that the teachers have long teaching hours. In addition to meeting the regulation of the Ministry of Education in Taiwan, the administration needs fulfill the regulation of Indonesian government. For example, 45 minutes per session and compulsory religion courses. Shao Yu Ching from the Department of Physics thinks that the students in Jakarta Taipei School enjoys sports a lot, so the teacher made some adjustment and let the students learn from competition. It's rarely practiced in Taiwan. Chi Yu An from the Department of Music thinks that local students enjoy more hands on courses compared to theoretical lectures.
In the practicum, 6 pre-service teachers participated in teaching, administrative and homeroom teacher, as well as other activities in school. They met students from different nationalities and think from the perspective of students' need. They could re-examine themselves and continue the path of becoming a great teacher.
