Prof. Tadashi Tokieda gave NTNU students an unforgettable talk with his 'Two Magic Tricks'. He speaks nine languages, grew up as a painter and pursued mathematics research later in life.
He was invited by the Prof. Lin Chun Chi, chair of the Department of Mathematics, for the ICCM talk. The ICCM talk is organized by the Math Department and the National Center for Theoretical Science. In his talk, he would explain complicated mathematical theory based on his toy, which are objects from daily life. His goal is to arouse students' curiosity about the phenomenon and to think.
Before the talk, Prof. Tadashi Tokieda said that this is his first time in Taiwan. He wanted to surprise the audience with his tricks and they can learn something from his show. He stressed that his tricks aren't just a simplification of science. The audience can experience science and magic at the same time and also realize that science and math are in our daily lives.
Prof. Tadashi Tokieda is enthusiastic about promoting science knowledge through his toys. He compares the path of learning math as a journey walking pass a desert. The talks or events he held are like a oasis that enchants the audience. However, the lectures gave at universities are to assist the students to find the oasis in the monotonous desert. There's a difference. Prof. Tokieda also mentioned that he is often asked by audiences after his talks 'What you've said is fun, but what are the actual value for application?' He wants to remind people to think again about the 'actual value'.
